WILLIAM BARR

Mr. William Barr, 87, of Pittsboro, passed away on Monday, (02-16-2015) at Pittsboro Christian Village.

A memorial service was held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, (02-21-2015) at Pittsboro Christian Village. Interment was held at 3 p.m. at Magnolia Memorial Gardens at Calvary Church in Charlotte.

Mr. Barr was a veteran of WWII and the Korean War, having served in both the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by his wife, V. Marion McMaster Barr; his parents, William J. and Elizabeth Barr; son, William Andrew Barr, and brothers, Ernest W. Barr and Howard S. Barr.

Survivors include daughters, Mary Beth Cherry ofCharlotte, Nancy L. Barr ofIndian Land,SC, Linda K. Barr of Winston-Salem; son, William M. Barr ofNorth Richland Hills,TX; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

PAUL E. ATKINS

Paul Edward Atkins, 70, of Siler City, died Thursday, (02-19-2015) at his residence.

Funeral services were held at  3 p.m., Sunday, (02-22-2015), at Siler City Church of God, with Rev. Neal Kight and Rev. Mark Strickland officiating. Burial followed at  Pleasant Grove Christian Church.

Paul was a native of Grayson County,VA, retired from United Fire & Safety in Goldston, and attended Siler City Church of God. He was preceded in death by step-father, Oscar Larue, brother, Robert “Rob” Atkins; half-brother, Melvin Hoosier, and half-sister, Carolyn Funk.

Surviving is his wife, Irene Hayes Atkins of the home; son, Wayne Edward Atkins of Staley; daughter, Kathy Baxter of Bennett; mother, Mary Atkins Larue of Siler City; half-sisters, Barbara Cornett, Sue Funk,  all of Fries, VA., Geneva Hash of Marion, VA., Brenda Ander of Mt. Airy; half-brothers, Thomas Hoosier,  Roger Hoosier, both of Fries, VA, four grandchildren, five step-grandchildren; and adopted brother, Terry Vinson of Siler City.

ELRITA RODGERS

Ms. Elrita Rodgers, 65, of Pittsboro passed away on Monday, (02-16-2015) at her home.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday (02-20-2015) at Emmanuel Fellowship Church in Siler City. Burial followed in Lynn Cemetery at Mitchell Chapel Church.

Mrs. Rodgers was born on April 11, 1949 to the late Mary Alston and Sam Henry Alston. A graduate of Horton High School, she retired from Moses Cone Hospital, and was a member of Emmanuel Fellowship Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sylvester Rodgers, and siblings, Lois Burnett, Bessie Mae Scurlock, and Wesley Alston.

Survivors include a daughter, Jessica Gilbert of Greensboro; sisters, Patricia Alston and Mary Henry Farrar, both of Pittsboro; brothers, Edward Alston of Pittsboro; and two grandchildren.

JOSEPHINE NICKENS PULLIAM

Josephine Nickens Pulliam, 87, of Sanford, died Monday, (02-23-2015) at Westfield Nursing and Rehab. Center.

A funeral service was held at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home Chapel inSanfordon Wednesday,  (02-25-2015), at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Robert Thomas presiding.  Burial followed atJonesboroCemetery.

Mrs. Pulliam was born in Moore County on December 15, 1927, to the late Buck and Gussie Odam Nickens.  She was preceded in death by a daughter, Lisa Jo Pulliam; sisters, Alice Jones, Thelma Goode, Ruth Brown, Ruby Cox; brothers, Ardale, Raymond, Ralph, Luke, Hubert and Cecil Nickens.

Surviving relatives include her husband, Thomas William Pulliam of Sanford and a brother, Harold Nickens of Cameron.

THOMAS EUGENE  TROYER, SR.

Mr. Thomas Eugene Troyer, Sr.,  74, of Robbins, passed away Monday, (02-23-2015) at his home.

Mr. Troyer will be buried at a later date in Butler,MD.

He was the son of the late Thomas William Troyer and Grace Coppersmith Troyer. He retired from the Millikan Plant in Robbins, and had worked as a security guard for  The Perdue Plant.  He was preceded in death by his parents and granddaughter, Amanda Wright.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Mary Barron Troyer of the home; sons, Thomas Eugene Troyer, Jr., and William James Troyer, both of Robbins; daughter, Brenda Lee Zimmerli of Robbins; sisters, Betty Kulchar of Dundalk, MD, Barbara Shadle of Hanover, PA, Linda Tidwell of Wellston, OK; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

DONA MARIE CONLEY WADDELL

Dona Marie Conley Waddell, 84, of Olivia, died Thursday, (02-19-2015) at Central Carolina Hospital.

A graveside service was held at Wayside Presbyterian Church Cemetery on Monday, (02-23-2015) at 3 p.m. with Rev. Bob Johnson presiding.

Dona was born inSpencer,WV, on March 28, 1930, to the late Claude and Vergie Bailey Conley.  She was preceded in death by husbands Max Ingram and Alfred Waddell and a son, James Alfred Waddell.

Surviving relatives include sons, Roger Ingram ofBarberton,Ohio; Tim Waddell of Olivia, Terry Waddell of Lemon Springs; four grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren.

ROBERT “ROBBIE” MARSH, JR.

  Mr. Robert “Robbie” Marsh, Jr., 52, of Siler City passed away Sunday at his home.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, (02-26-2015) at 1 p.m. at Jordan-Grove AME Zion Church with burial in the church cemetery.

GEORGE THOMAS  McPHERSON

   George Thomas McPherson, 87, of McPherson Lane, Siler City, died Wednesday, February 18, 2015 at his residence.

 Mr. McPherson was born inChathamCounty on March 3, 1927, the son of Luke and Sallie (Fox) McPherson.  George attended Pleasant Grove Wesleyan Church, was an Army veteran of WWII and had been employed with Blythe Construction as a mechanic and equipment operator.  He enjoyed fishing, farming and working on tractors. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Jones McPherson; his parents; brothers, Howard and Dave McPherson;  sisters, Lela Dark andSue Way.

He is survived by sons, Tom McPherson and wife Sharon of Sanford, Mike McPherson and wife Carol of Siler City; two grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; two great-grandsons and one great-great-grandson.

The family received friends Friday, February 20, 2015 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City.

HAZEL KARRIKER LISK

Hazel Karriker Lisk, 91, of  West Fifth Street, Siler City died Tuesday, February 17, 2015 at Chatham  Hospital, Inc., Siler City.

Mrs. Lisk was born inCabarrusCountyon September 10, 1923 the daughter of Neal and Lillie (Benfield) Karriker.  Hazel was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Siler City and the Friendship Sunday School Class.  Hazel was a homemaker who also helped in the operation and ownership of Lisk Sales, a health careers promotional business.  She loved cats, cooking, having family gatherings and working with her flowers.  She was a loving wife and mother whose life was her family and church.  Hazel was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Norman C. Lisk, Sr.; her parents; sisters, Mae Karriker, Edith Sloop, Elsie Sloop, Kathleen Funderburk; and brother, Vard Karriker.

She is survived by daughters, Jane Lisk Andrews and husband Robert of Siler City, Martha Lisk of Pittsboro; son, Craig Lisk, Jr. and wife, Colleen of Blowing Rock; granddaughter, Tish Robertson and husband, Jim of Blowing Rock; great-grandchildren, Camille and Jake Ward of Blowing Rock.

JOYCE BOYKIN COPELAND

   Joyce Boykin Copeland, 78, died Friday, February 20, 2015, at UNC Hospital,Chapel Hill, from injuries sustained from a car accident earlier this month.

Mrs. Copeland is survived by her loving husband of  45 years, Clinton Copeland of Pittsboro; a daughter, Jan Copeland Lienau and her husband OB of Pittsboro;  grandson, Clint Lienau of Greenville, NC; forever family members, Vanda and Chuck Miller of Matthews, NC,  their son, Christopher Miller of Monroe, NC and  daughter Elizabeth Lee and husband Mathias of Monroe, NC, and their sons, Harry and Jack.

The family received friends at the Copeland home on Monday, February 23 from 6-8 p.m. A funeral service was held on Tuesday at the Pittsboro United Methodist Church at 2 p.m.

 CLYDE T. FOXX

Clyde T. Foxx transcended to his heavenly home on Friday, February 20, 2005. He was born December 7, 1927 to the late Samuel Foxx and the late Annie Foxx inSilerCity.

Funeral service will be held Friday, February 27, 2015 at 11 a.m. at the First Missionary Baptist Church, 914 Martin Luther King, Jr., Blvd., Siler City. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Foxx of the home; two daughters, Judy K. Branch (John) of Raleigh, Janet C. Foxx of Miami, Florida; two sisters, Anner K. Siler and Madeline J. Moffitt, both of Siler City; one brother, Charlie A. Foxx (Jean) of Bonlee; two grandsons, John W. Branch, IV (Bonnie) of Lyndhurst, NJ and David T. Branch of Raleigh; and one great-granddaughter, Olive A. Branch of Lyndhurst, NJ.

Clyde was preceded in death by his two brothers, Frank S. Foxx and Walter D. Foxx.

KAREN LOUISE MARTIN

Karen Louise Jeremiah Martin, 64, of Pittsboro, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, February 22, 2015 at her home surrounded by her family.

She was an avid baker and loved camping. Mrs. Martin’s family, friends, and her pets were the things she cherished the most.

Mrs. Martin is survived by her loving husband of 40 years, Bob Martin of Pittsboro; her sons, Denis Martin and wife Jill of Raleigh,  Darren Martin and wife Caitlin of Raleigh; and a grand-daughter, Ashlynn Martin ofRaleigh.

The family will  receive friends at Hall-Wynne Griffin Chapel on Friday, February 27 from 6 to 8 p.m.

The funeral service will follow Saturday morning at the funeral home at 11 a.m.

WILLIAM CAPERS  CARNES

William Capers Carnes, 85, of SilerCity, died Monday, February 23, 2015.

Burial will be in Currie Cameron Cemetery, Hamlet.

Mr. Carnes was born May 20, 1929 in Hamlet. He served seven years in the US Navy, received his Masters Degree from NC State University and served 38 years with the N.C. Wildlife Commission. He was preceded in death by brother, Richard Carnes. He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Carnes.

Survivors include his wife, Irene S. Carnes; children, Donna C. Harris of Moneta, VA, Pamela C. Hayes of Siler City and spouse, Douglas A. Hayes, Capers Wayne “Pizzy” Carnes of Snow Camp and spouse, Wendy Hornaday; sister, Mary Sue C. Ramsey of Hamlet; brothers, Michael F. Carnes of Hamlet; grandchildren,   Jaime F. JAMES CARL KIVETT

James Carl Kivett, 94, of Staley died  Thursday, (02-12-2015).

A funeral service was held on Sunday, (02-15-2015) at 4 p.m. at Sandy Creek Baptist Church with  Rev. Travis Brock and Rev. Dr. Carl Garner officiating.

James was a graduate of Liberty High School and a member of Sandy Creek Baptist Church, where he was the choir director for 42 years and was presented with a lifetime Deacon award.  He worked at Liberty Hosiery Mill and Kellwood in Siler City until retiring.  He then worked at Ramtex as a nighttime security guard. He was a farmer. He was the son of the late Karr Lee and Flossie McMasters Kivett, and was also preceded in death by one sister, Pauline Brown.

Surviving is his wife of 72 years, Kathleen Ward Kivett; daughter, Paulette Kivett Deviney of Staley; sons, James Edward “Eddie” Kivett ofIndependence, VA and Wallace “Wally” Kivett of Climax; sister, Mary Lee Hicks; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Ruth Adelide Elisabeth Larsen Gohier, 85, of Cameron, died Thursday, (02-12-2015), at her home.

Mrs. Gohier was born inBrooklyn,NYon February 3, 1930, to the late Frantz Larsen and Dagny Hammer Larsen.  She was a bank teller.

She is survived by her husband, William A. Gohier; sons, William Martin Gohier of Lansing, MI, Robert  K. Gohier  and Carl Gohier, both  of Cameron; daughters, Christine McNeill and Cynthia Fore, all of Sanford; seven  grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

PASCAL T. “PAT” NOLES

Mr. Pascal T.  “Pat” Noles, of Sanford, died Sunday, (02-15-2015) at Sanford Health & Rehabilitation Center.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, (02-19-2015) at 11 a.m. in the Casey Chapel of St. Luke United Methodist Church with Dr. Gene Cobb and Rev. Jay White officiating.  The family will receive friends following the memorial service at the church.

He was born November 17, 1923, son of the late Willie T. Noles and Susie Barefoot Noles of Johnston County. He was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church and the A.S. Parker Sunday School Class.  He also served on the church Administrative Board.  He retired from Lee Tire & Supply and was also a World War II Veteran. He received a Victory Medal with 2 Bonze Service Stars, Good Conduct Medal, and Germany Occupation Ribbon.

He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Inez Noles; son, Ronald “Ron” Noles and one granddaughter, all of Sanford; brother, Melvin Noles of Benson.  He was preceded in death by four sisters and four brothers.

Gary Wayne Keck, 71, of Pittsboro-Goldston Road, Bear Creek died Wednesday, February 11, 2015 at UNC Hospitals,Chapel Hill.

Mr. Keck was born in Chatham County on August 19, 1943, the son of Alton Henry and Martha Alice (Hart) Keck.  He attended Antioch Christian Church and was a retired mechanic from the Chatham County School System with 25 years of service. Waynewas preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Ann (Elkins) Keck; daughter, Paula Keck Barrows and husband Chris of Bear Creek; granddaughters, Reagan, Kaitlyn and Kenley Barrows; sisters, Peggy Riddle and husband Jack of Sanford, Glendale Carpenter of Pittsboro, Linda Kelly and husband Lewis of Sanford, Faye Boys of Murrells Inlet, SC; brother, Randy Keck of Bear Creek; and several nieces and nephews.

Clark Davis officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.  Serving as pallbearers were Gary Boys, Mark Riddle, Johnny Carpenter, Larry Kelly, Samuel Keck, Benjamin Keck, Stephen Elkins and Bryan Fincher.

 THOMAS HORACE MOODY

   Thomas Horace Moody, 90, of  Old US Hwy 421, Bear Creek died Wednesday, February 11, 2015 at First-Health Hospice Palliative Care, Pinehurst.

Mr. Moody was born inChathamCountyon July 5, 1924, the son of Willie Murk and Cora (Dunn) Moody.  He was a Navy veteran of WWII and retired from Bradshaw Supply after 21 years of service as warehouse manager.  Tom was a member of Sandy Branch Baptist Church where he was a former deacon, superintendent of Sunday School, and a teacher.  He also served on several other committees including organizing a group that furnished emergency relief supplies to the Red Springs area after tornado destruction.  Tom enjoyed fresh water and surf fishing, hunting and sports, especially softball.  He enjoyed farming and loved the Atlanta Braves.  Tom taught his grandchildren cat fishing and was a caregiver for his mother.  Tom was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Eva Bare, Lois Stollings, Margie Blalock and brother, Clarence Moody.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Virginia (Sipe) Moody; daughters, Patricia M. Butt and husband Robert of Oak Island, NC, Norma Moody Faulk and husband, Ronald of Southern Pines, Nancy M Lindley and husband Darryle of Snow Camp; brother, Earle Moody and wife Sandra of Vass; sister, Lucille Moody and husband Jimmy of Bear Creek; sister- in- law, Betty Moody of Siler City; grandchildren, Shane Pegram, Thomas Cooney, Jr., Mary E Maynard, Jamie Gilliland, Chris Gilliland; great-grandchildren, Jacob Gilliland, Jenna Gilliland and Madison Coston.

    ELIZABETH HUNT LLOYD

Elizabeth Hunt Lloyd, 83, of Pittsboro died Saturday, February 14, 2015 at Laurels of Chatham, Pittsboro.

Mrs. Lloyd was born in Sullivan County, Tennessee on May 15, 1931 the daughter of Doc Hunt and Alice Velma Hunt Phipps. Elizabethwas a former member of Kendrick’s Creek Methodist Church in Kingsport TN and had been a telephone operator for Southern Bell for 34 years.  She had been a resident of Laurels of Chatham for the last 10 years and enjoyed being a caregiver for others.  Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Lloyd; daughters, Geneva Velma Primm, Virginia Kathleen Primm; her parents; one brother and three sisters.

She is survived by daughter, Mischelle P. Blinsmon and husband, Terry of Siler City; sisters, Louise McCracken of Blountsville, TN, Jean Overbay of Kingsport, TN; grandchildren, Elizabeth Mischelle Brown of Durham, Marianne Elizabeth Blinsmon of Siler City; great-grandchildren, Jason Lee Parker Barnes of Pittsboro, Katy Lee Mischelle Barnes of Raleigh, and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, February 22, 2015 at 1 p.m. at Joy Baptist Church, 61 Bower Store Road, Siler City with Rev. Rodney Staley officiating.  Lunch will be provided for family and friends following the memorial service at the church.

JOHN W. RATZLAFF

John Ratzlaff passed away on January 17, 2015 at the age of 68 years after a stroke was complicated by dementia and influenza. John was born in California and lived there until he retired from the Aerospace and Defense Industry in 2002.

At that time, John decided to travel the USA in a trailer. He travelled to 49 US states (many states more than once) and all the Canadian Provinces including Newfoundland and Labrador. Alaska was one of his favorite places to visit. He was an enthusiastic explorer travelling the world both personally and with work, living in England for four years. He knew immediately when travelling to the Pittsboro area that this is where he wanted to live out his life. He loved the peacefulness, the genuine people, and the four seasons that the area provided.

An avid golfer and outdoorsman, John spent many years playing a number of sports, especially golf and hunting. He was a great NASCAR fan and supported Tony Stewart no matter the race outcomes.

John was an easy spirit and well-liked by many people. He will be greatly missed by all those whose lives he touched. He is survived by his wife, Sherry; his brother Stephen, and niece Elizabeth.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, February 26, 2015 at 2 p.m. at New Salem Church in Pittsboro. Following the service there will be celebration of John’s life at the Pittsboro Roadhouse in Pittsboro.

Bonnie Lee Copeland was born September 2, 1925 in Brush Hill, Oklahoma to Joseph Pierce and Grace (Knight) Pressgrove.  She passed away Tuesday, February 10, 2015 in Okmulgee at 89 years of age.

Bonnie graduated from Sapulpa High School in 1943.  She married Quinton Copeland on March 26, 1944 at the Beggs United Methodist Church.  Quinton’s job with the U.S. Government moved them to Ethiopia from 1958-1962.  Bonnie enjoyed fishing and the game show channel, but her greatest love was spending time with her grandkids and great grandkids. She liked following her daughter, Bobbi, when she played basketball and later became an avid Oklahoma City Thunder fan.  Bonnie was preceded in death by her father, Joseph Pressgrove, mother, Grace Payne, husband, Quinton Copeland and a brother, Bob Pressgrove.

Survivors include her children, Quenetta Gayle Cox and husband Paul of Preston, Susan Denise Ratcliff and husband Chuck of Natura, Harry Kevin Copeland and wife LuVona of Okmulgee, and Bobbi Lovingood and companion, Jason Mueller of Pittsboro, NC; six grandchildren, Keith Cox of Natura, Jennifer Walker of Tulsa, Brandon Cox of Preston, Josh Copeland of Norman, Amelia Copeland of Oklahoma City and Nick Lovingood of Pittsboro, three great grandchildren, Jason Walker, Jr., Kiara Walker, Vaughn Cox; and her beloved dog and cat, Ginger and Louie.

Friends visited from 12 to 8 p.m. on Friday and the family was present to receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.

A funeral service was held at 10 a.m. Saturday, February 14, 2015 at the McClendon-Winters Funeral Home Chapel in Beggs, officiated by her son, Harry Kevin Copeland.  Interment followed in the Beggs Cemetery.  Casketbearers were  Keith Cox, Brandon Cox, Jason Walker, Josh Copeland, Robert Pinkston and Wesley Pinkston.

A luncheon followed the interment at the McClendon-Winters Life Celebration Center in Okmulgee.

Mr. Lester Allen Myrick, 82, of Bennett, died Tuesday, (02-03-2015), at FirstHealth Hospice in Pinehurst.

Funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Saturday, (02-07-2015) at Beulah Baptist Church with Dr. Curtis Barbery and Dr. Neal Jackson officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Moore County, the son of the late William Alton and Ola Blanche Albright Myrick. He was a member ofBeulahBaptistChurch, where he served as former deacon and Sunday school director. Mr. Myrick was a member of NC State Horseshoe Pitching Association  and the NC Horseshoe Hall of Fame.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Alene Maness Myrick of the home; daughter, Dianne Russell of Robbins; sons, Ricky Myrick of Bennett, Harold Myrick of Concord; sisters, Clara Jean Kennedy of High Falls, Ruby Butler of Bennett; six grandchildren, and 14 great-grand-children.

Minister Isley was born October 7, 1931 inRandolphCountyto the late Mance and Mary Isley. She was employed at Ramtex Inc for several years and retired from Ramseur Interlock. She began preaching in 1988 and founded the church that is now the Word of Life Holiness Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Griff and won, Willey Spinks.

VERNELL MARY BROOKS-MATTHEWS

Mrs. Vernell Mary Brooks-Matthews, 87, of Siler City died Saturday, (02-07-2015), at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro.

Funeral services were held Wednesday (02-11-2015) at 1 p.m. at Jordan Grove AME Zion Church with burial in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Matthews was born July 26, 1926 inChathamCounty, the daughter of the late Lee Clinton and Carrie Jane Brooks. She was a member of Jordan Grove AME Zion Church where she served in many capacities, including the Ministry of Kindness, Senior Usher Board, Senior Choir, and Home Mission Workers. She was also on the Deaconess Board, a member of Sunday School  and she was the founder the of Old Fashioned Day Celebration that has since been named Vernell Matthews Day. She was also a member of the Friendship Chapter 521, Order of the Eastern Star. She was a former Nurse’s Aide.She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Matthews, a son Claude, and six siblings.

Survivors include sons, Elbert Matthews of Greensboro, Curtis Matthews, Grover Matthews, Lola Matthews, all of Siler City; nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; sisters, Henrietta Matthews and Katie Brady, both of Siler City, Ruth Whitley of Greensboro, and Peggie Waddell, of Ramseur.

WILLIAM EDDIE ALSTON

Mr. William Eddie Alston, 68 of Pittsboro died Saturday, (02-07-2015) at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, (02-12-2015) at 3 p.m. at Mitchell Chapel AME Zion Church.

Mr. Alston was born February 28, 1946,  the son of the late Henry G. Alston and Lillie M. Alston Burnette. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Frank Henry Alston. A member of Mitchell Chapel Church, he served on the Usher and Trustee boards. He was a graduate of Horton High School, and retired from Honeywell after 28 years as a lab technician. He was a past member of St. Paul Lodge #147 of Pittsboro and G. Wesley Allen Consistory #324 of Sanford.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Helen T. Alston; mother, Lillie M Burnette of Pittsboro; daughter, Erika A. Green of Raleigh; son, Willie “Reggie” Alston of the home; and one grandson.

Jim loved to ride his motorcycle and play various musical instruments, guitar being his favorite.  He enjoyed going to concerts and taking road trips.

Ronnie Douglas  Lowe, 61, of  NC Hwy  902, Bear Creek died Wednesday, February 4, 2015, at his residence.

Mr. Lowe was born inChathamCountyon August 7, 1953,  the son of William Bobby andGeneva(Phillips) Lowe.   Ronnie was member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church and was employed by Static Control of Sanford.  He was a NASCAR fan, especially of Dale Earnhart.  He enjoyed collecting guns and knives and was known as a jokester with the ability to see the lighter side of most situations.  Ronnie was preceded in death by his mother, Geneva Phillips Lowe and a brother, David Michael Lowe.

He is survived by children, Michelle Lowe Dixon and husband Josh of Bear Creek, Jason Douglas Lowe of Bear Creek, Melissa Cheryl Lowe of Raleigh; father, Bob Lowe; sister, Cheryl L. Poe and husband Michael; brother, Darryl Lowe, all of Bear Creek: and granddaughter, Haley Corley.

Asheboro- Betty Jean “Becky” Bowman, 79, of Siler City, died Monday, February 9, 2015 at Randolph Hospice House in Asheboro.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

She was a Randolph County native, having been born March 30, 1935 in Worthville.  She was preceded in death by her parents, William Dolphus Bowman, Sr. and Stella Chandler Bowman. Also preceding her in death were sisters, Lora Adele Bowman, Elizabeth Sue Bowman and brothers, James R. Bowman, Robert G. Bowman, A.C. “Bunnie” Bowman, and a beloved niece, Bonnie Gail Beane.

Survivors are brothers, William D. Bowman, Jr. of Pleasant Garden, Lewis L. Bowman and wife Sue of Randleman; sisters, Marie B. Lowe of Snellville, GA and Patsy B. Dabbs of Siler City. She is also survived by nine nieces and nephews, and three  precious dogs, Ellie, Bythee, and Bonnie.

Becky was a graduate of Asheboro High School and a honor graduate of Appalachian State University.  She retired from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools after 32 years as a librarian.  She had an avid interest in genealogy and local history, and published several books.

James Philip Canterbury, 72, of Bear Creek went home to be with the Lord, Monday, February 9, 2015.

Mr. Canterbury was born in Blue Jay,West Virginia on April 3, 1942, the son of James Woodrow and Garnet Evelyn (Crook)Canterbury.  He was an Army Veteran and employed by USF Holland Trucking Company.    Philip was a member of Red Hill Missionary Baptist Church where he was a member of the Adult Sunday School Class and the building committee.  He was a former member of the Chatham County Planning Board and a current member of the Board of Directors of Bonlee Fire Department.  Philip enjoyed fishing, sports, time spent with his grandchildren and lending a helping hand to his family and friends when the need would arise.  He also was co- owner/ operator of C & E Tours.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Pearl (Morrison) Canterbury; daughter, Beverly Leigh Canterbury of Asheville; son, Steven P. and wife, Margaret “Marti Canterbury” of Newton; sisters, Ruth C. Taylor, Jennie C. Freeland; brother, Charles “Pat” Woodrow Canterbury, all of Daniels, W. VA; grandchildren, Casey Philip Canterbury of the home, James Robert and Jesse Adams Canterbury of Newton.

Nancy Helen McMichaels (Rauch) of Carrboro,NC passed away on Sunday, February 8, 2015 at 11:55 a.m. in Durham,NC.

She was born in Waterloo,IA on July 21, 1955 to Robert Rauch and the late Annie Rauch of Mattoon,IL.  She is survived by her father, Robert Rauch of Mattoon,IL; daughter, Jamie Drage (Waggoner) ofChesapeake,VA; and son, Jonathon Gibson of Mattoon,IL.  She is also survived by her sisters, Susan Vadakin (Rauch) of Mattoon,IL, Rebecca Mumma (Rauch) ofSt. Louis,MO; and brother, David Rauch of Arcola,IL.

Nancy was a graduate of Mattoon High School, class of 1973.  She moved toNorth Carolinain 1994 where she began her career as a Mortgage Broker.  Years later, she became an independent painter and owner of Quick Paint Pros in Carrboro,NC.  She was known and easily recognized by her hot pink pick-up truck that she drove around the area.  Later in life, she aspired to be a nurse and began her education before her journey with cancer began in 2013. Nancy was a kind and loving soul who always put others before herself.  Her smile and personality would light up every room.

Walter Odell Perry, 86, of Sanford died Tuesday, (01-27-2015) at Sanford Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Mr. Perry was born inPendergrass,GA, December 11, 1928, to the late Eugene Walter and Ina Woodie Ivey Perry.  He was preceded in death by a son, Walter Mitchell Perry.  He was a Retired Major in the US Air Force.  Mr. Perry was a member at Rocky Fork Christian Church, an auctioneer, a lifetime member of The Disabled American Veterans, a lifetime member of The Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a member of Sanford Wild Life Club.  He served 26 years in the US Air Force and was a recipient of two Distinguished Flying Cross medals and was a Chief Electronic Warfare Officer.

“Pa” Larry Lee Bass of Chapel Hill passed away unexpectedly January 27, 2015 at UNC Hospitals inChapel Hill.

Mr. Bass was born inWilson, NC to the late Samuel and Olivia Bass on July 31, 1950.

Hilda Moon Hill, of Wilmington,NC, passed away on Thursday, January 29, 2015, at Silver Stream Nursing and Rehabilitation Center,Wilmington.

She was born inBennett,NCon July 2, 1934, daughter of the late William Jones and Vallie Phillips Jones.

Mrs. Hill was a life-long member of the Bennett Baptist Church in Bennett, and a member of the church choir.  She loved to play bingo and at any given opportunity enjoyed traveling.

Surviving are her daughter, Kaye Houston and husband, Michael and son Konnor of Wilmington; her son, Dean Moon and wife, Marcy of Greensboro; grandsons, Eric Moon, Yates Moon and wife, Heather; and two great-grandsons, Addison Moon and Tyler Moon.  Her husband ,Walter Hill and a son, Tony Hill preceded her in death.

Bert Junior Tackett, 60, of Hillsborough,NC, passed away at his daughter’s home on Sunday, January 25, 2015. He was surrounded by family and friends.

Bert was born December 29, 1954 inPrestonsburg,Kentuckyto the late Wilbur Lee Tackett and the late Maxie Newsome.

Throughout his life, Bert had a wide range of interests and hobbies including gardening, coin collecting, and NASCAR racing. He was a fan of bluegrass music and enjoyed attending music events. He also enjoyed traveling, often to visit family out-of-state. Bert was an amazing cook, often preparing large meals for his whole family. He had a close attachment to his cat, Boots. His life-long devotion was to his family and friends, often giving more to them than they could ever repay.

He moved from Mud Creek,Kentuckyas a child toNorth Carolina with his family. He worked in construction for many years and for theUniversityofNorth CarolinainChapel Hillfor the majority of his career; he retired from the university.

Bert is survived by his loving family including his two daughters, Crystal Gail Tackett of Spring Lake, NC and Teresa Ann Tackett of Pittsboro; his three grandchildren, Kevin Troy Helbert, Hailey Lynn Helbert, and William James Waddell; his sisters,   Barbara Johnson of Kentucky and Alpha Strowd of Edenton, NC; his brother,   Carl Tackett of Pittsboro;   his sister-in-law, Vickie Tackett of Temple, Georgia;   and his mother-in-law, Daisy Mae Hatley of Chapel Hill.  His special friends included Deborah Hatley of Pittsboro,  and Ruth Holt of Butner. He had many nieces and nephews that he loved dearly.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Maxie Newsome and his father, Wilbur Lee Tackett; brothers, Frank Tackett, Edgar Tackett, Rex Tackett; sisters Lorrene Tackett, Genevieve Hall, Carol Bennett, and Geraldine Lester.

Visitation was held at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home,396 West StreetPittsboro,NC  on Friday January 30, 2015 from 6-9 p.m. Services were at Hall-Wynne on Saturday January 31, 2015 at 1 p.m. Burial  followed at Markham-Memorial Gardens in Chapel Hill.

Mr. Pervie Vernon Garner, 84, of Robbins, passed away on Tuesday, (01-20-2015) at his home.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday (01-23-2015) at Acorn Ridge Baptist Church with Rev. John Williamson and Rev. Edwin Moore officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery with military honors by Randolph County Honor Guard.

He was the son of the late Bessie Garner and Annie Ritter Garner. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Hazel D. Garner, brothers, Ervin, Hubert, Cleve Garner, sisters,  Iola  Williams, Zora Mashburn,   and great-grand-son, Kale Singleton.

Mr. Garner was a truck driver with Robbins Mill, Amertron, and Burlington Industries. He was a member of Acorn Ridge Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon.  He was also a farmer and veteran in the Marine Corps.

Mr. Garner is survived by sons, Keith Garner of the home, Boyd Garner of Robbins; daughter, Joy Garner ofSalisbury;  seven grandchildren and nine great-grand-children.

WILLIAM FRANK KISER, JR.

Mr. William Frank Kiser, Jr., age 71 of Siler City, passed away Tuesday, January 20, 2015, at the Genesis Rehab Center in Siler City. He was the son of the late William Frank Kiser, Sr., and Mae Purvis Kiser. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Betty Lois Hayes and brother, David Lee Kiser.

A graveside service was held at 2 p.m. Thursday, January 22, 2015 at Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery in Bennett, with Dr. Neal Jackson officiating. The Kiser family received visitors at the home of Tammy and Jimmy Walls on Highway 902 in Bear Creek.

Mr. Kiser was a retired maintenance mechanic for  Collins-Aikman in Siler City, working there for over 25 years.  He enjoyed the outdoors, loved his family, and watching TV.

He is survived by his daughters, Tammy Walls and husband Jimmy of Bear Creek, Frankie Kiser Nichols and husband Michael of Level Cross; sisters, Frances Fields  and husband Lonnie of Graham, Jo Anne Brady of Newport, NC; brother, Gary Wayne Kiser of Georgia. Beverly (Sue) Petty van Westendorp departed this life inRichmond,Virginia, and went to be with our Lord on January 17, 2015.

The daughter of Dr. Carroll T. and Mrs. Vivian G. Petty, she was born on September 6, 1966, inRichmond.  A graduate of Douglas S. Freeman High School (Richmond, 1984) and Lynchburg College (Lynchburg, Virginia, 1989), she enjoyed and excelled in numerous pursuits, including running, piano, painting, drawing, and writing.  Employed through her life as a paralegal, medical office administrator, and sales and marketing consultant, her occupational passion lay in volunteerism, particularly inNorfolk,Virginia, atSt. Paul’s Episcopal Church, and Ghent Area Ministry.  She married the love of her life, Christiaan, inRaleigh,North Carolina, on June 27, 2003, and followed him toSavannah,Georgia, andChesapeake,Virginia.

Predeceased by her father, she is survived by her husband; her mother; sisters Loretta and Denise; brothers-in-law Warren and Michael; niece Brittany; and nephews Carl, Mikey, and Brandon; amongst numerous cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends.

A service celebrating her life was held in the chapel atDerbyshireBaptistChurch,8800 Derbyshire Road,Richmond,Virginia, on Saturday, January 24, 2015.  Viewing was at 11 a.m., with funeral services to immediately follow at 12 p.m.

Judith “Judy” Dossenbach Wood, 72, of Siler City died Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at her residence.

Mrs. Wood was born in Nash County on November 9, 1942, the daughter of John R. and Sadie Lee (Blount) Dossenbach.  Judy grew up inLeeCounty, was a graduate of UNC-G with a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education.  She retired fromSilerCityElementary Schoolafter 25 years of service.  Judy was a member of the First Baptist Church of Siler City.  She enjoyed serving others and spending time with her family.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby S. Wood, her parents and brother, Jack.

She is survived by daughters, Beth Wood Warren and husband, Kevin of Charlotte, Lori Wood Davis and husband, Mark of Siler City; grandchildren, Taylor Warren, Elizabeth Davis and Jackson Davis; brothers: Tom Dossenbach, Alan Dossenbach; and sister-in-law, Florence Dossenbach, all of Sanford.

  William  “Bill” Womble Boone, 84, of  Pine Avenue, Siler City died Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at Chatham  Hospital, Inc., Siler City.

Mr. Boone was born in Chatham County on November 19, 1930, the son of Jessie and Altie (Womble) Boone.  Bill was a member of First Wesleyan Church of Siler City, and was employed by Hadley Peoples Manufacturing for 45 years. He was a part time employee of Chatham County Schools with 16 years of service.  He enjoyed traveling, gardening, his church and watching his grandchildren swim.  Bill was preceded in death by an infant son, William Womble Boone, Jr., his parents, four brothers and two sisters.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Barbara (Holt) Boone; daughter, Rhonda B. Poe and husband Mike of Siler City; sons, Tony Boone and wife Penny of Myrtle Beach, SC, Rev. MARGARET E. ERNST

Margaret E. Ernst, age 92, of Sharon,Wisconsin, formally of Battle Creek,MI died Saturday, January 17, 2015 at the Ridgestone Assisted Living Center in Delavan,WI.

Margaret was born October 29, 1922 and raised in Greensboro,NC to James and Edith (Lawrence) Edmondson.  Margaret was a supervisor at Blue Bell Factory prior to her marriage to Lt. Bill Ernst after WWII in 1946. Margaret was a devoted mother and homemaker.  She was a member ofSt. PaulEvangelicalLutheranChurchwhere she was active in the Ladies Aide and  the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League.  She was a member of the Lakeview Schools PTA and loved caring for her children and grandchildren.  She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, cooking, listening to music, gardening and collecting Angels.

Margaret is survived by daughters, Katherine “Kathy” (Rev. Dale) Blanchard of Sharon, WI, Karen L. Heath of St. Joseph, MI; sons, Ronald A. Ernst of Battle Creek, MI, Karl R. (Barbara) Ernst of Siler City, NC, and Robert K. Ernst of Bellevue,  MI;  six grandchildren, one great grandchild; sister, Louise Turner of Greensboro, NC; and a brother, Dallas (Becky) Edmonson of Greensboro, NC. Margaret is fondly remembered by several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Lt. Col. William S. Ernst in 1998; son, William K. Ernst in 1989; brother, James Edmondson in 1980; and sister, Rose Baucom in 2014.

Funeral services were held Thursday, January 22, 2015 atSt. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Battle Creek,MI.  Interment followed at Fort Custer National Cemetery.

Harold Oetzel Davis, age 82, of Randleman, died Saturday, January 24, 2015, peacefully at his home.

Mr. Davis was born September 15, 1932, the son of Roy Oetzel and Barbara Evelyn Lewis Davis.

  Mary Stinson Ward, 86, of Staley died Sunday, January 25, 2015.

Mrs. Ward was born inChathamCountyon September 7, 1928, the daughter of Delphus H. and Jennie (Benner) Stinson. She was a homemaker, farmer’s wife, and a Postal Clerk. Mary was a member ofZionUnitedMethodistChurch, a former Sunday School teacher, member of the UMW, a Trustee and had been involved with the youth group. She also held several offices within the Methodist Conference, and was a 4-H Leader. Mary loved being with her children and grandsons. She was a 1947 graduate ofBonleeHigh School, a school bus driver and played softball and basketball. Mrs. Ward was preceded in death by her parents,  her husband, R. Wayne Ward and infant son, R. W. Ward, Jr.

She is survived by two daughters, Doris Jeanette and partner, Virginia Brown of Philadelphia, PA, Edith Ward Boys of Sanford, NC;  one son, John W. Ward and wife, Margo of Greenville, NC; three grandsons, Uriah, Isaac and Julian Ward; and a sister, Barbara Nell S. Cheek of Goldston.

Miss Kali Alicia Beal, 19, died tragically on Thursday, January 22, 2015.

Kali was born inSanford,North Carolinaon September 05, 1995 to Kristin and Robert “Shannon” Beal.

She is survived by her grandparents, R.G. and Diane Beal, and Charles and Mary Webster, both of Goldston; her sister, Anna Beal of Pittsboro; her uncles, James and Patricia Beal, Mark and Jackie Beal, all of Broadway, Lee Ethridge and Wendy of Durham; her nephew, Saylor Mitchell; her cousin, Johnmark Beal of Bear Creek; and her boyfriend, David Alston of Pittsboro.

Kali was aSageAcademygraduate and attendedChathamCentralHigh School. She loved color, music, taking photos, competing in softball and basketball and especially, her cat, Izzy. Those who knew Kali quickly found her to be honest and fair, always placing other’s needs before her own.  Her compassionate and nurturing heart showed throughout the care she gave to her patients as a Certified Nursing Assistant, (CNA). Kali loved to live life to its fullest and will always be remembered for her genuinely sweet, warm, smile that instantly invited one in return.

Cornelius Edward McInnis, 68, of Sanford, died Friday, (01-16-2015), at Cape Fear Valley Hospital, Fayetteville.

The funeral was held Tuesday, (01-20-2015) at 2 p.m. at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Kenny Dowdy and Rev. Terry McInnis presiding.  Burial was in Lee Memory Gardens.

Mr. McInnis was born inLeeCounty, on February 10, 1946, to the late Hubert Alton and Mattie Marie Hart McInnis.  He was self employed as an accountant and served his country in the US Air Force.

ROLAND J. KIDD

Roland Junior Kidd, 64, of Asheboro, died Saturday, (01-17-2015).

A graveside service was conducted at  2 p.m. on Wednesday, (01-21-2015), at Deep River Baptist Church Cemetery in Ramseur, with Pastor Sam Tally officiating.  Military honors were provided by the Randolph County Honor Guard.

Mr. Kidd was born in Randolph County, on June 8, 1950.  He served in the US Army during Vietnam and was then employed by  Hughes Furniture.  He was preceded in death by his father, Roland B. Kidd and brother, Calvin Dean Kidd.

Surviving are daughters, Sherri Anne Kidd of Asheboro, Donna Renee Kidd  of Colbern, VA; son, James Calvin Kidd of Asheboro; mother, Mary Louise Carter Kidd, of Asheboro; sisters, Brenda Kidd Stovall, of Siler City, Virginia Kidd Rich of Asheboro; brother, Roger Eugene Kidd of Asheboro; and ten grandchildren.

Mrs. Bessie L. Siler, 81, of Siler City died Thursday, (01-15-2015) at Chatham Hospital in Siler City.

Funeral services were held Monday, (01-19-2015t at Unity Powerhouse Holiness Church in Staley with Bishop William Goins officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Siler was a member of Unity Powerhouse Holiness Church where she served as a “Mother of the Church”.

Clara Mae McNeill Cox, 83, passed away Friday (01-16-2015) at Randolph Hospice House inAsheboro.  She had been a resident of Universal Healthcare in Ramseur.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, (01-19-2015) at Shiloh Baptist Church in Ramseur with Rev. Bruce McLanahan, Rev. Mark Beane, and Dr. Rev. Howard McNeill officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

She was the daughter of the late Harrison and Flossie Williamson McNeill, aMooreCountynative, and retired from Kayser-Roth in Ramseur. Willie Roger Goins, 73, of Sanford died Thursday, (01-15-2015), at St. Josephof the Pines in Moore County.

ELMO H. McNEESE

Elmo H. McNeese, 86, of Siler City-Snow Camp Road, Siler Cityd ied Tuesday, January 13, 2015 at Randolph Hospice House, Asheboro.

Mr. McNeese was born October 23, 1928 in Franklinton,Louisiana, the son of Jessie and Jennie (Summerall) McNeese.   Elmo was a farmer with a love for horses.  He was an outdoorsman, enjoyed hunting and traveling.  He had a gift of gab and could be found talking with people from all walks of life.  Elmo served his country as a Merchant Marine, in the Coast Guard.  He was a rescue diver and an expert marksman.

He was a member of the Siler City Masonic Lodge # 903 A.F. & A.M. for 62 years, a Shriner, and a Scottish Rite.   Elmo was a 32 Degree Mason and received a Diamond Jubilee Certificate for 60 years of service.  He had served as chaplain for the Siler City Lodge.   He had a brick placed in his honor, at the Children’s Hospital in Greensville, South Carolina and often transported children to the Shriner Hospital.  He was a member of Rocky River Baptist Church and was a past superintendant of the Sunday school. Elmo was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and three sisters.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jean (Culberson) McNeese; daughters, Janet M. Faulk and husband, Bobby of Mooresville, Margie M. Edwards and husband Jeff of Columbia, TN; sons, Henry McNeese and wife Michaela of Atlanta, Georgia, Michael McNeese and wife, English of Staley; sister, Jennie M. Henderson of Lafayette, LA; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Ruth Boekelheide Northington, 96, of Siler City died Thursday, January 15, 2015 at home.

Mrs. Northington was born November 19, 1918 inNorthville,South Dakota, the daughter of William and Lulu (Schlake) Boekelheide.  Ruth was a graduate of South Dakota State and then pursued her Master’s degree at the University of Chicago.

Ruth married Dr. James Northington in Vermillion,South Dakotain 1945.  The couple made their home inSilerCityin 1961.  She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Siler City, the Chatham Hospital Auxiliary, the Garden Club and the Coffee Break Bowling League.

Ruth is survived by one daughter, Anne Northington Mathias and husband Dean of Siler City; one son, Bill Northington of Greenville; grandchildren, Helen Mathias of Greensboro, Cate  and John Northington of Ormond Beach,FL, Bryce Northington of Durham and four great-grandchildren.

 BERTA MAE TILLMAN

  Berta Mae Tillman passed away at Coble Health Center, TwinLakes on Wednesday, January 14, 2015, after months of declining health.

She was preceded in death by her husband of  64 years, Ernest F. Tillman; three brothers, Ed Wilson, C. D. Wilson, Ray Wilson, and infant granddaughter, Julie Ann Pleasants.

Berta Mae was born on July 11, 1925, to the late Paul Alexander Wilson and Ruby Phillips Wilson. She was the oldest of seven and grew up in a simple rural setting where she, alongside her mother, shared responsibility for six younger brothers.  She graduated fromBonleeHigh Schooland worked for many years at A.J. Schneierson and Son inSilerCity.  She was a longtime member of Moon’sChapelBaptistChurch, where she taught Sunday School, was Director of the WMU and a member of the choir.

Her family and friends were very important to her.  She was an accomplished cook and always had a dish in hand when visiting friends and neighbors.  Her pastimes were golf, which she enjoyed with her husband, as well as gardening and flower arranging.  She had a wonderful sense of humor and wry wit which we all enjoyed.  She had a special relationship with her grandchildren and great-grand-children, who kept her young at heart.

Cherishing memories of a wonderful life are two daughters, Linda Pleasants and husband David of Greensboro, Becky Oliver and husband Tommy of Gibsonville; one son, Mike Tillman of Ramseur; her grandchildren, David Pleasants III, Lisa Pleasants, Christie Pleasants-Heffner and Meredith Hargett; three surviving brothers, Ralph Wilson of Siler City, Arthur Wilson and Jerry Wilson, both of Bear Creek; and numerous nieces and nephews.  Her great-grandchildren are Nina and Lyric Pleasants, Athena and Saiona Braman-Pleasants, Georgia Heffner and Landon Michael.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Alamance House inBurlington, where she was a resident for almost two years, and also to Michele, Gwen, Tom and Rhonda of Coble Health Center,TwinLakes, Elon for their loving care and compassion to our mother.

John Albert Andrew, 94, formerly of Cramerton, Mount Holly and Goldston, died Wednesday, (01-07-2015) at Coventry House.

Mrs. Wanda Lee Cox Nance, 76, of Randleman, passed away at her home on Friday, (01-09-2015).

Mrs. Nance was a Randolph County native, and a retired barber from Click’s Hair Specialist. She was the daughter of the late Yancey Young Cox and Bleeka Brewer Cox. She was also preceded in death by brothers  Ira Cox, Donald Cox, Lloyd Cox,  sisters, Doris Cox York, Marie Cox Gee, and Martha Cox Teague. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Asheboro, and was former president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Gideons.

   Fred Harold Stokes, age 91, of Dallas,GA, passed away on Monday, January 5, 2015.

He was born on November 8, 1923, in Hilly,Louisiana, to the lateC.A.and Mary DeLony Stokes, and was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Stokes, brother, B. Ragan Stokes, and sister, Drucille Tidwell.  Mr. Stokes was a United States Marine Veteran serving in World War II, and was a member ofDallasFirstBaptistChurch.  He worked at Lockheed-Martin as an Aero Engineer, and later at Grummen Aircraft in Long Island,N.Y., and Piper Aircraft in Lakeland, FL.

Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Ron and  Chris Stokes of Dallas, GA, Harold and Elaine Stokes of Dallas, GA, Gerald and Carol Stokes of Douglasville, GA, David and Gayla Stokes of Dallas, GA; daughter and son-in-law, Mary Anne and Bob Mason of Hahira, GA; half-brothers, Tad Stokes, Wayne Stokes and Joe Stokes; half-sister, Jane Williamson; eleven grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Imogene “Jean” Dodd Evans, 90, of Siler City died Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at Universal Health Care Of Ramseur.

  DANIEL L. “DAN” GRAHAM

   Daniel L. “Dan” Graham, 87, of Pittsboro,NC peacefully passed away in his sleep Saturday afternoon, January 3, shortly before a mass for his beloved late wife was being said at the St. Julia Catholic Church.  Dan was born on April 28, 1927 in Donnelsville, Ohio, the son of Louis J. and Barbara Jane (Leffel) Graham.  After graduating Olive Branch High School, he served in the United States Navy, including the end of WWII. He attendedWittenbergUniversity on the GI Bill of Rights, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1951.  That year he was hired at Clark Air Base onLuzon Island,Philippines, where he was a popular teacher. Dan left Clark AB in 1959 to farm coffee in the Bukidnon Province of Mindanao Island,Philippines, a place he loved and would share stories about. He met his late wife, Jean, during his time in Bukidnon and together they moved to Pohnpei Island,Micronesia in 1971 where he served as teacher at Ponape Agriculture and Trade School and later as Economic Development Advisor for the governments of Pohnpei and Chuuk Islands. In 1983, their family moved to Pittsboro where Dan was a farmer and woodworker, spending Saturday mornings selling with his family at the Carrboro Farmers Market.  He and Jean grew many vegetables and fruits and he handcrafted cedar chests and other wood products. Even after health made it difficult to farm and woodwork, he continued to attend the Carrboro market with his son. Dan was energized by the vitality of the market and he relished the friends who would visit him there to share discussions on current events, theology or philosophy. Dan enjoyed BBC and NPR radio and reading; in his later years he remained sharp, desiring to continually seek knowledge and truth. At nearly 70, he learned to use the computer where he typed numerous essays and connected with friends from around the world.  Dan also loved to spend time with his grandchildren and would often call them his pride and joy. He delighted in their accomplishments and growth.

Dan is survived by his son Daniel “Danny” Graham, Jr. of Henderson, NV and grandchildren Desirea and Darryl Graham, his daughter Charleen (Graham) Cody and husband Jeff of Chapel Hill and grandchildren Chance and Bryce Cody, his son Louis T. Graham and wife Patricia of Pittsboro and grandchildren Sydney and Louis Graham, Jr. and his son Jonathan T. Graham and wife Samantha of Suffolk, VA. Dan is also survived by two sisters, Mollie (Clarence) Mohr of Springfield, OH and Susie (Robert) Hazel of Lexington, KY. He was preceded in death by his parents, beloved wife Generosa “Jean” (Flora) Graham, sister Barbara Lou Sotomeyer and brother Louis “Luke” Graham.

As Dan was a gift in life, so he was in death with his wish to serve anatomical research.

Joanne Clark West, 79, of 118 Acentala Court, Raleigh died Thursday, January 8, 2015 at her residence.

Mrs. West was born in Chatham County on April 3, 1935 the daughter of James Claude and Evangeline Brower Clark.  Joanne was a teacher with more than 30 years of service, beginning her career atHenrySilerSchool.  She was a member of Rocky River Baptist Church.   Joanne was preceded in death by her parents.

JAMES “JIMMY” WADE HARRIS

James “Jimmy” Wade Harris, 71, of Pittsboro passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Thursday, January 8, 2015.  Jimmy was born to the late Wade and Annie Harris on August 28, 1943 in the Silk Hope community ofChatham County,NC.  Jimmy was a genuinely loving and devoted husband to Polly, his wife and life mate of 54 years.  He was equally devoted and supportive of his two sons, Roger and Greg, in which he instilled his values as a father and friend.

Jimmy loved sports and wanted others around him to enjoy them.  No one was more at home on the basketball court, coaching on the baseball field or tirelessly playing in the backyard with his family than Jimmy.  The relationships and experiences he formed while playing and coaching were among the most rewarding and lasting values of his life.

Upon graduating from school, Jimmy started his 45 year career with Sears, working his way up to management positions and ownerships of Sears stores in Pittsboro, Siler City and Sanford, NC.  Always the competitor, Jimmy approached his work the same way he approached sports, striving to be the best he could be and achieving great success.

Jimmy was the youngest of three siblings and is survived by his wife Polly Harris; sons, Roger and Greg Harris of Raleigh and their families, including four grandchildren; sisters, June McMath of Greensboro, Frances Cockman of Snow Camp and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.

We the family would like to thank Signature Healthcare of Chapel Hill for their patient and gracious care of our husband and father during this trying time.  We would also like to thank the nurses and doctors at UNC Hospitals.

The family received friends Sunday, January 11, 2015 from 2 to 3 p.m. at Plainfield Friends Meeting.  The funeral was Sunday, January 11, 2015 at 3 p.m. at Plainfield Friends Meeting,1956 Plainfield Church Road, Siler City with Kevin Rollins and Ken Spivey officiating.  Burial followed in the church cemetery.

ALICE  HILLIARD GILLILAND HAMMER

Alice Hilliard Gilliland Hammer, 99, of Goldston, a former resident of Ramseur, died Friday, January 9, 2015 at Sanford Health & Rehab, Sanford.

Mrs. Hammer was born in Goldston on February 4, 1915, the daughter of Bernice and Lucy (Gaines) Hilliard.  She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church, retired from Klopman’s in Ramseur after 40 years of service. Aliceenjoyed cooking, sewing, crocheting, working with her flower gardens and traveling.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Romie Hammer; son, Ronald Gilliland; her parents; and a brother, Everette Hillilard.

She is survived by one daughter, Vivian G. Petty ofRichmond,VA; two sons: J. B. Gilliland and wife Jackie, Lionel Gilliland and wife Camilla, all of Goldston; daughter-in-law, Augusta Gilliland of Goldston; 15 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

The family received friends Monday, January 12, 2015 from 10 to 11 a.m. at Antioch Baptist Church,3825 Bonlee-Carbonton Road, Goldston and at other times at the home of her son, J. B. Gilliland.  The funeral was held Monday, January 12, 2015 at 11 a.m. at Antioch Baptist Church with Rev. Mike Garner officiating.  Burial followed inGainesGroveCemetery, Goldston.

RUDOLPH CLAYTON WILLETT, JR., “TINK”

Mr. Rudolph Clayton Willett, Jr. “Tink”, age 76, of Randolph Street in Bennett, passed away at his home on Saturday, January 10, 2015. He was preceded in death by his father, sister, and granddaughter, Courtney Willett.

A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 13, 2015 at Bennett Baptist Church in Bennett with the Rev. Tim Strider, and John Phillips officiating.

Mr. Willett, “Tink,” was a Chatham County native, and a truck driver for over 40 years for Klaussner Furniture. He liked to camp, ride his Harley-Davidson motorcycle, but most of all loved his family, especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by his son, Tony K. Willett and wife Gina of Bennett; grandson, Clay Willett and his wife Jennifer of Asheboro; great-granddaughter, Addison Willett; mother, Pearl Willett of Bennett; brothers, James (Bub) Willett and wife Vernece of Asheboro, Bill Willett and wife Pat of Bennett; sisters, Emma Hoffman of Lexington, Lanie Estridge and husband Tony of Bennett, Dottie Mendenhall and husband Larry of Siler City; and special friend, Berlene Wright of Asheboro.

HOWARD WEAVER, JR.

Howard Weaver, Jr., 72, passed away in his home, Friday, January 09, 2015.

He was born January 12, 1942, in Mahoning County,Ohio, to the late Howard Weaver, Sr. and Mary Louise Turnbull.

Mr. Weaver was a local building contractor and former District Boy Scout Leader of Pack 0970.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Clara Zigler ofOhio.

Survivors include his loving wife of 29 years, Ann Weaver of Pittsboro; his sons, Nicholas Weaver, Sr. of Carrboro, and Howard Weaver III of Boone; his daughter,  Terry Getzoff of Raleigh; his brother,  Frank Weaver of Ohio; along with numerous grandchildren.

A visitation was held from 1-2 p.m., Tuesday, January 13, 2015 at Browns Chapel UMC, Pittsboro. The funeral service began at 2 p.m. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

LOIS HARRIS MOORE

 Lois Harris Moore died peacefully at her home on Monday, January 12, 2015.

Lois was born in Apex, NC on November 12, 1924.  She is preceded in death by her father and mother, Fabius and Floyda Seagroves, her husbands, Joseph Prichart Harris and James Sidney Moore, her daughter, Ann Virginia Harris and her granddaughter, Tanya Kay Jennings.

She is survived by her daughters, Cathy Jo Harris, Mary K Harris and son-in-law, Gerald Blount; her granddaughters, Sarah Davis and Amy St. Louis  and husband Scott St. Louis; her grandsons ,Joseph Estes and Will Estes, and great-granddaughters, Brenda St. Louis, Lois Geist, Soliani Estes and great-grandson, Ryan St. Louis.

Lois moved to Pittsboro when she married Joe in the early 1940’s and enjoyed a very long and active life.   They built the house she has lived in for over 50 years.  She and Joe enjoyed riding horses while raising their daughters. Lois worked at the Kayser-Roth hosiery mill in Pittsboro, the Bank of Pittsboro and Social Services before obtaining her accounting degree at night school to become the Town Clerk of Pittsboro for over 20 years.  Lois touched many hearts and was a very giving person to all.  She loved her friends and family.  She was very fond of music, dancing, travel, fishing, and cooking.  She was famous for her pound cakes and chicken and dumplings.  She was always telling folks to slow down and take time to “smell the roses”.  Lois was a lifetime member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and loved going to the conventions.  She volunteered at the Pittsboro Historical Museum and loved to meet the people that visited there.  She was a member of the Pittsboro Baptist Church and the 3 L’s.  She loved going to the Christmas shows at Myrtle Beach and other trips the 3 L’s sponsored.  She also loved going to Charlie’s Barn on Friday nights for the music and friendship and to the Sanford Enrichment Center on Saturday night where she sold half-and-half tickets.  Lois will be remembered and missed by all the folks who knew her.

A graveside service was held Wednesday, January 14   at  1 p.m. at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church located at 204 West Salisbury Street in Pittsboro. A visitation was held after the service at the Pittsboro Baptist Church Fellowship Hall from 2 to 4 p.m.

Barry Mark Poindexter, 53, of Holly Ridge, formerly of Sanford, died Friday (12-26-2014).

Mr. Poindexter was born December 4, 1961, inLeeCounty, to Glenn Poindexter and Joyce Griffin Thomas.    He was preceded in death by a sister, Diane Koch and step-father, George Thomas.  He was employed by Performance Fibers.

Mr. Wilfred “Corkey” Grenfell Caulk, 80, Bennett passed away Saturday, 01-03-2014 at his home.

He was the son of the late Ernest E. and Edna Brown Caulk. He was a retired truck driver for Perdue, and a veteran in the U.S. Army. Mr. Caulk was a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Glendon. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mrs. Ruby Calcutt Wester, 86, of Sanford died Tuesday, (12-30-2014) at Central Carolina Hospital.

Marion “Billie” Mann McLaughlin, 89, Siler City died Friday, (011-02-2015) at Siler City Center.

Mrs. McLaughlin was born inAlamanceCountyon March 19, 1925, the daughter of William Owen and Viola Coleman Mann.  She was a homemaker and had worked for Hadley Peoples Manufacturing for 25 years. Marionwas preceded in death by her husband, Gene McLaughlin; grandson, James McLaughlin and her parents.

Gilbert Lee Stone, 91, of Sanford died Saturday, (01-03-2015) at his residence.

Mr. Stone was born in Lee County, on January 5, 1923, to the late Ferd Robert and Jennie Belle Autry Stone.  He retired from Sanford Brick and Tile Company after forty years of employment.  Mr. Stone served his country in the US Army during WWII.  In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Virginia Moore Stone; brothers David, James, and Bennie Stone; sisters, Annie Belle Wicker and Betty Harrington.

  Malcolm Levern Stone, 75, of Sanford died Sunday, (01-04-2015) at his residence.

Ms. Brenda Gail Milligan Owen, 67, of Robbins passed away, Thursday, (01-02-2015) at her home.

She was a retired Registered Nurse, with a Bachelor’s Degree, and had worked at First Health Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst, Randolph Hospital in Asheboro, and Chatham Hospital in Siler City.

Joyce Ann Horton Stewart, 80, of Sanford, died Thursday, (01-01-2015), at Westfield Rehab and Health Center.

Mr. Ernest Russell Davis, Jr, 87, of Seagrove, passed away on Monday, (01-05-2015) at the Randolph Hospice House inAsheboro.

The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m..Thursday, (01-08-2015) at Riverside Baptist Church with Rev. Kenneth Bouldin officiating.  Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service in the church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

He was the son of the late Ernest R. Davis, Sr. and Lillie Hayes Davis.  He was preceded in death by his sister, Nina Davis Pritchard, brother, Jim Reuben Davis. He was retired from Burlington Mills inAsheboroas a loom fixer.  Mr. Davis was US Army Veteran of the Korean War and earned two Bronze Battle Stars.

MABEL ROANY JOHNSON HANCOCK

Mabel Roany Johnson Hancock, age 92, of Chapel Hill, crossed over the river to the shade of the trees Friday, January 02, 2015.

Mabel was born to the late Syd and Ocie Johnson on February 15, 1922 inChatham County,N.C.where she would reside until her death. There, she met her first husband, Russell “Lee” McGhee, Sr., and had their son Russell McGhee, Jr. After working several years at The Munition Plant in Carrboro, during World War II, Mabel began her 40-year employment at UNC Hospital.  In addition to her love for cooking and needlework, Mabel had a greater love for her family.

She is survived by her son, Russell L. McGhee and wife Leesa  of Chapel Hill; a sister, Peggy Jenks of Graham; a sister-in-law, Frances Johnson of Bear Creek,  and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mabel is preceded in death by three sisters, Katie Wilson, Florence Briggs,  Frances Honeycutt and two brothers, Junius Johnson and Ernest Johnson.

A visitation was held from 11 to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, January 6, 2015 at Ebenezer United Methodist Church, Apex,  with the funeral service following at 1 p.m.

Marie Brooks Phillips, 84, of Siler City, died Saturday, January 3, 2015 at Chatham Hopital, Inc., Siler City.

Mrs. Phillips was born in Randolph Countyon March 17, 1930, the daughter of Cleve and Ada(York) Brooks.  She retired from Ramseur Interlock where she had worked for over 30 years as receptionist.  Marie was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Siler City.  She was preceded in death by first husband, Marion Burke and step-son, Steve C. Phillips.

She is survived by her husband, Bob P. Phillips; step-daughter, Jean Griffin (Bo Walters); step-son, Ronnie Phillips (Janice); step-grandchildren, Jeff Griffin (Becky), Jennifer G. Perry (David), Steve Clark Phillips, Jr., Julie P. Albright (Jody), Amy P Ritter (Chance); step-great-grandchildren, Ashley, Heather and Jessica Griffin, Brooke and Carson Perry, Jarod and Rachel Albright, Blake and Bailey Ritter, Haley Phillips; and special cousin, David and Jo Gaye Cain.

   Colleen Dixon Howard, 88, died Wednesday, December 31, 2014, at her residence.

Mrs. Howard was born in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia on January 29, 1926, daughter of Clarence and Ismay Dixon.

JACK CLINTON GASTER, SR.

Jack Clinton Gaster, Sr., 87, of Pittsboro, peacefully went home to his Lord on Thursday, January 1, 2015.

Born February 10, 1927, in Chatham County, NC, to Hubert Edward Gaster, Sr. and Mary Christmas, Mr. Gaster graduated from Bells High School in 1944 and honorably served in the Merchant Marines during WWII.   He worked for Wrights Machinery/Sperry Flight Systems in Durham,  for 35 years.   An avid hunter, fisherman, and sportsman, Mr. Gaster most loved coaching his sons, Randy and Jack, attending the football games which Jack coached, hunting with Randy and enjoying his grandsons’ and great-grandchildren’s activities.

Mr. Gaster was preceded in death by his parents; step-parents Althia (Pete) Amos and Ralph Bedient; brothers, Hubert Edward Gaster, Jr., William Lee Gaster; sister, Bettie Catherine (Cathy) Gaster; his beloved first wife of 31 years,  Dorothy Johnson Gaster; and son, Jack Clinton Gaster, Jr.

He is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Esther Marie Henry Gaster of Pittsboro; son, Randolph (Randy) Thomas Gaster of Clarksville, VA; daughter-in-law, H.K. Pittsboro – Mr. Meade Julius Gilmore, Sr., son of Daniel Earl Gilmore and Maude Cook Gilmore (both deceased) and beloved husband of Edith Jewell Crowder Gilmore, passed away on December 28, 2014.  Meade and Edith were wed October 23, 1946 and spent 68 years together.

Preceded in death by his son, Meade J. Gilmore, Jr.; brothers, Henry D. Gilmore, Robert L. Gilmore,  Harry E. Gilmore(living wife, Nancy);  sisters, Margaret G. Lovette, Aretta G. Hall, and Mary Gilmore.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Drusilla G. Register of Massillon, Ohio,  Timothy N. Gilmore (Jinx) of Wilson, J. Scott Gilmore of Pittsboro, Kathi D. Gilmore (Sharon) of Raleigh, Randy J. Gilmore (Sonya) of Oxford, and Frankie Gilmore Jones (David) of Pittsboro.

John Thomas “Jake” Cole, Jr., 90, of Sanford, died Tuesday, (12-23-2014) at his home.

Mr. Cole was born in Lee County on October 22, 1924, to the late John Thomas Cole and Bertie Cole.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Maggie Womble Cole and a daughter, Linda Ann Cole Johnson.  He served in the US Army in the battle ofOkinawaduring WWII.  He retired after 30 years of service with Public Gas Co., now PSNC.  Mr. Cole was a past member of the Deep River Fire Department, a member of the VFW, the American Legion, and Tramway Baptist Church.

Charles Herbert Stanford, Jr., 81, of Julian, died Saturday, (12-27-2014).

Dr. Stanford, a native of RandolphCounty, was born April 8, 1933, the son of Charles Herbert and Bessie Rush Stanford. He served in the US Army, managed numerous textile companies and owned a furniture factory.  Later, he earned his doctorates in divinity and psychology, and became an ordained minister. Charles is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Margaret Judy Boling Stanford, and his brothers, Joseph and Paul Stanford.

He is survived by daughters, Adrienne Stanford Chafee of Julian, Susan Stanford Jankowski of Garner; brothers, William Stanford of Liberty, James Stanford of Greensboro; sister, Betty Young of Liberty; and five grandchildren.

Mr. Gatlin was the son of the late William Thomas and Rosa Deaton Gatlin. He was a member ofRiversideBaptistChurch, and Marietta Masonic Lodge #444 in Ramseur. He was a 32 Degree Mason. A farmer, he had worked at Charles Craft inSilerCity, Spring Mills in Biscoe, and Millikan Mills in Robbins. He was also a member of the Randolph Historical Society. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Ralph, Franklin, Lester, and Lonnie Gatlin; and a sister, Pauline Bowman.

She was married 54 years to Leon Glosson until his passing, July of 2012. Leitha was a hard worker who retired from Townsend, Inc., as a payroll coordinator.  She loved her family dearly.

Gilda Gray Boone Norton, 52, of Siler City, died Wednesday, (12-17-2014) at Randolph Hospice House in Asheboro.

Mrs. Norton was born in Randolph County, the daughter of Robert Franklin Boone, Jr. and Barbara Mabe Boone. She had worked as a machine operator in textiles and was a member of Community Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her father, and a baby grandchild.

She is survived by her husband, Rickey Lynn Norton; sons, Timothy “TJ” Norton, Anthony “Duke” Norton, both of Siler City; daughter, Heather Boone of Siler City; mother, Barbara Dean Boone of the home; sister, Darlene Garcia of Siler City; brother, Wade Boone of Bennett; and five grandchildren.

Ted was the son of Joseph and Ada Welch of Bennett. He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers  Lynn, Lester, Frank, Howard, Porter, and Henry Welch.

Ted retired as a principal from Bennett Elementary School, having taught there before becoming principal. A member of Bennett Baptist Church, he served over the years as Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent, and Deacon. He was a Navy veteran of WW II.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Maxine Chilton Welch of the home; sons,  Mark Welch of the home, Van Welch of Hillsborough; brother, Nuby Welch of Farmer; and sister, Nellie Brewer of Bennett.

SALLIE PENDERGRASS WARD

   Sallie Pendergrass Ward, of Liberty, died December 16, 2014 at Coventry House of Siler City. Sallie, the daughter of Joseph Merritt and Nannie Thomas Pendergrass, was born July 3, 1924 inSiler City. She was the ninth of twelve children.

Sallie resided with her husband, Robert Elton Ward, Sr., for 65 years in Liberty, and the last five years they have lived at Coventry House of Siler City.  She was a loving mother to Robert Elton Ward, Jr. and his wife Carolyn, Kenneth Alfred Ward and his wife Shug, and Sallie Ann Ward VanLear, and her husband Charles Albert VanLear, III. She loved being a grandmother to Thea Ward Robichaux, her husband Ivy, Jennifer Ward James, her husband Stewart, Taeh Allison Ward, and Sarah Ward Sherman, and her husband Thomas. Due to her long life, she was blessed to be a part of the lives of three great-grandchildren, Zyler Ward Robichaux, Ivy Charles Robichaux, IV, and Elodie Blythe Booher Sherman.

In addition to her immediate family, left to cherish her memory is one sister, Patsy G. Kirchoff, North Fort Myers, FL, along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Sallie was a devoted wife, hard working mother, and friend to many. She was a dedicated member of First Baptist Church, Liberty, where she served in various ministries for many years. Being a very talented and creative lady found Sallie always working on a “project.” The Liberty Garden Club, Home Demonstration Club, and Liberty PTA were just a few of the local groups where Sallie served as a leader. Her days were filled enjoying time with family and friends, assisting Robert with his bookkeeping service, and her many hobbies–including cooking, sewing, crafts,  reading, gardening, canning, and fishing and traveling with her husband.

A funeral service was held at The Loflin Funeral Home Chapel in Liberty, Friday, December 19, 2014 at 11 a.m. Burial followed at Oakwood Cemetery, Siler City, NC. The family received friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Patsy Brewer Stewart, 76, of Siler City died Wednesday, December 17, 2014 at Randolph Hospice House, Asheboro.

Mrs. Stewart was born in Chatham Countyon June 13, 1938, the daughter of Marcus and Exie Lee (Sumner) Brewer.   Patsy’s working career included employment at Carolina Telephone, Southern States, substitute teaching and Capital Bank.  She was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church where she was a member of the Ladies Adult Sunday School Class.  Patsy enjoyed flower gardening, was a member the Smiling  Squares Dance Club, trips to the beach, cooking, making fig preserves, reading her Bible, going to church, and sewing.  She also enjoyed feeding birds and watching them.  She was preceded in death by husbands, William Clarence Still and Stanley I. Stewart; sisters, Jean Vernon, Ruby Thompson, Rebecca Evans, Barbara Camp; brother, Darrell Brewer; and step-daughter, Linda Emerson.

She is survived by one son, Terry Still from Bolivia; daughter, Janna Sanders and husband Kirk of Asheboro; grandsons, Shannon and Dustin Wilkie, Will Still; step-son, James Stewart of Parkton,NC; five step-grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

   Willis Lee  Whitehead, 77, of  Sedgefield Drive, Siler City died Thursday, December 18, 2014 at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.

Mr. Whitehead was born inPerquimans County,NCon January 19, 1937, the son of George W. and Hilda (Griffin) Whitehead.  He was a graduate of LeeSenior High School and a 1960 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hillwith a BS in Pharmacy.  He worked as a licensed pharmacist for 50 years, coming to Siler City to open Chatham Rexall Drug with his business partner, Henry Dunlap.  Willis was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Siler City having served as a Sunday School teacher, a Deacon and a member of the choir.  He maintained continuous civic involvement with Siler City Chamber of Commerce, Jaycees and Lions Club, where he received a lifetime membership in 2013.  Willis was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Edna Donevan.

He is survived by his wife, Diane (Bowers) Whitehead; daughters, Barbara Townsend and husband Bobby, Loretta Batchelor and husband Chris, both of Bear Creek; sisters, Barbara Neblett of Richmond, VA, Marcella Grantham of Red Springs, NC; grandchildren, Dean, Barrett and Alayna Townsend, Katelyn and Hunter Batchelor; and a great-granddaughter, Sophie Townsend.

Ada Mae Watson Scotten, 82, of  Lake Drive, Siler City died Sunday, December 21, 2014 at her residence.

Mrs. Scotten was born in Jacksonville,Floridaon March 15, 1932, the daughter of Martine T. and Ada(Moore) Watson.  She was a member of Siler City Pentecostal Holiness Church and a retired teacher.  Ada Mae was preceded in death by her husband, Benton A. Scotten; her parents; two sisters, Nellie Elizabeth Watson, Helen Hall, and daughter-in-law, Cynthia Scotton.

She is survived by sons, John B. Scotten of Bear Creek, Marty Scotten and wife Debbie of Staley; brother, Gene Watson of Bonlee; grandchildren, Cassadi Walden and husband, Brett of Siler City, Thomas and Lauren Scotten of Siler City; great-granddaughter, Mary Catherine Walden.

 RONALD “MONTE” MONTGOMERY FAULKNER

  Ronald “Monte” Montgomery Faulkner, 53, of Apex, died Friday, December 19, 2014 at his home.

He was a native of Warren County, IL, 1979 graduate of Jordan-Matthews High School in Siler City, veteran of the U.S. Air Force and was employed Integrators, Inc.

Monte was preceded in death by his wife, Janice Asa Faulkner and his father, Ralph Louis Faulkner.

He is survived by his son, Ethan Faulkner; a daughter, Abby Faulkner, both of the home; his mother, Reva Zielke of Alexis, IL; brother, Rod Faulkner of Lincoln, NE; his step-parents, Russell and Joan Faulkner Webster of Siler City; and a step-brother, Andy Elmore of Bear Creek.

A celebration of Monte’s life was held Tuesday, December 23, 2014 at 2 p.m. in Thomas Funeral Home Chapel, Fuquay-Varina with Rev. Doug Humphrey officiating. The family received friends immediately after the service.

ROBERT NORTON DOWNING

   Robert Norton Downing, 90, of  NC Hwy 902, Siler City, died Monday, December 22, 2014 at his residence.

Mr. Downing was born in Needham, Massachusetts on October 30, 1924, the son of Lawrence and Audrey (Norton) Downing.  Robert was an active member ofPleasant HillUnitedMethodistChurchwhere he served as Sunday school superintendant for over 30 years, taught Sunday school and was a lay speaker.  He was a Navy veteran of WW II and had been employed at Kellwood as a shipping supervisor.  Robert was a sports enthusiast.  He enjoyed all sporting events and had played professional baseball for the Carolina League.  He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Audrey Cooper.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Rochelle (Clark) Downing; sons, Larry Downing and wife Pat of French-burg, KY, Tommy Downing of Siler City; grandchildren, Jason and Chad Downing; great-grandchildren, Makayla, Michael, Rebecca, Sarah, Caleb, Hannah; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Saturday, December 27, 2014 from 10-11 a.m.  at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church.

The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Judith “Judi” Elaine Krafft McPherson, 57, of Siler City, passed away Tuesday, (12-09-2014) at The Hospice & Palliative Care Center of Alamance Caswell.

Mrs. McPherson is the daughter of the late Julius and Helen Fellers Krafft and was also preceded in death by one brother, Fred Cunha.

Emel Louise Anderson Cleary, 83, of Sanford, died Sunday, (12-14-2014) at her home.

The family held a graveside service at Baptist Union Cemetery in Troutdale, VA on Wednesday, (12-17-2014) at 2 p.m. with Rev. Ronnie Cleary presiding.  Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Cleary was born in Flatridge,VAon April 30, 1931 to the late Harlow Anderson and Hattie Testerman Anderson.  She worked in manufacturing yarn as a spinner.

She is survived by her husband, Benjamin Daniel Cleary of the home; son, David Benjamin Cleary of Moncure; daughters, Betty Jo Worsham, Barbara Jean Churchill and Bonnie Joyce Nedrow, all of Sanford; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Mary Elizabeth Hodgin Martin, 83, ofLiberty, died Saturday, (12-13-2014) at the Hospice House of Randolph County.

Mary was the daughter of the late Roy Newton Hodgin and Elma Etta Davis Hodgin.  She and her husband operated Martin Appliance Company for 52 years.  She was a member of the Liberty Chamber of Commerce, Women’s Auxiliary of American Legion Post 81, and she was the first lady elected to the Liberty Town Council. She received the Republican Woman Award, was a Hospice Volunteer, a Liberty Association of Churches Volunteer and was active in her church. She was preceded in death by her husband Charlie Edgar Martin; a sister, Claudine Hodgin Baxter,  one granddaughter, and a great-grandson.

Surviving is her daughter, Cindy M. Lowe of Liberty; sister, Marie Hodgin Smith of Climax; and two grandchildren.

Mr. Tommy Roger Hussey, 75, of Robbins, passed away at his home, on Sunday, (12-14-2014).

Mr. William Donnell Siler, 63, of Siler City died Monday, (12-01-2014) at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.

Funeral services were held Sunday, (12-07-2014) at Unity Powerhouse Holiness Church in Staley, with Bishop William Goins officiating.

Mr. Siler was born February 23, 1951 to James and Callie Siler. A graduate ofJordan-MatthewsHigh School, he was a member ofUnityPowerhouseHolinessChurchwhere he served as Sunday School superintendant, president of the Gospel Mass Choir, and was part of many other programs of the church.  He retired fromChathamHospitaldue to his health. In addition to his parents, he was preceded by a brother, Harry Siler and sister, Gloria Powell.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Wilma Cheek Siler; daughters, Tammy C. Walden, Teresa Siler, both of Siler City; four grandchildren; brother, Rev. Willie “Pete” Siler; sisters, Mrs. Patricia Austin, Loretta Williams of Siler City, and Mrs. Hazell Abbott of Upland, CA.

Mrs. Iris Elisa Rouse Moon, 53, of Carthage, died Monday, (12-15-2014) at her home.

Iris was born in Moore County, the daughter of the late Carl Grier Rouse and Thelma Hicks Rouse. During her lifetime she had worked at Kingwood Nursing Home inAberdeenas activities coordinator. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, James Grier Rouse.

She is survived by her husband, James Robert “Robbie” Moon;  daughter, Tonya Cranford of Seagrove; sons, Steven Phillips of Robbins, Brandon Phillips of the home;  step-son, Austin Moon of HighFalls; sisters, Narcissus Jones of Parkton, Lilac Kennedy of Robbins; brothers, Doyle Rouse of Asheboro, Keith Rouse of Carthage, Gerald Rouse of Eagle Springs, Adian Rouse of Robbins, Vaughn Rouse of Eagle Springs; and three grandchildren.

Byron Joy (B. J.) Andrews, Jr., went home to be with the Lord Saturday, December 13, 2014.
Mr. Andrews was born inChathamCounty on December 19, 1950, the son Byron J. Andrews, Sr. and Naomi (Phillips) Andrews.   B. J. was employed at Klopman Mills, and Covil Insulation, Wilson, before an auto accident in 1971 which caused brain damage and disability. Even with his disabilities, B. J. loved life, shopping, outings, and trips with his friends at Hudson’s Family Care Home which greatly enriched his life. He was a member ofPentecostalVictoryTemple.

He is survived by two sisters, Brenda A. Moody and husband Jimmy of Siler City, Bonnie A. Evans and husband Jack of Lugoff, SC; nephews, Kevin Moody, Andrew and Christopher Evans; niece, Christie Bright and husband Anthony, and four great-nieces. He also leaves behind a capable and compassionate caregiver, Susie Hudson. He is also survived by hisHudson’s family, Jeanette, Robin, Greg, Aaron and Terry of Hudson’s Family Care Home.

  Emily Ann Scott, 84, of Blowing Rock passed away on Thursday December 11, 2014 at her residence.

Emily was born on October 19, 1930 in Sile City to the late Guy Vernon Williams and Margaret Decie Dark Williams. Emily was a respected retired school teacher.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 30 years, Phillip Matthews Scott, a brother, Dick Williams, and a sister, Blanche Willoughby.

Survivors include her long-time companion Rupert Flaherty; her daughters, Phyllis Glenn Scott-Melton and husband Michael of Marietta, GA, Margaret Ann Scott of Raleigh; and sons, Phillip Matthews Scott of Raleigh, Shayne Flaherty of Raleigh and Shawn Ell of Raleigh. Survivors also include three grandchildren, Brittney Phillips of Dallas GA, Blake Melton of Dallas,GA and Jordan Ell of New York, and great grandchildren, Carson Phillips, Reagan Phillips, Wyatt Melton and Gunner Melton of Dallas, GA.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 10, 2015 at Faith Bridge United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ben Carson officiating.

Mitchell was born in Greensboro in 1995, son of August Raye Binkley and Asa Thomas Modery. He enjoyed fellowship working with the Bennett Baptist Handymen, assisting them on many projects for those in need.  Preceding him in death was a brother, Kelly Modery.

He is survived by his mother August Sutphin of the home; his father, Asa Modery of High Point; brothers, Steven Sutphin and Jacob Hinson, also of the home;  step-brothers, Jeff Barber of High Point, Nick Sutphin of Greensboro; step-sister, Chasie Sutphin of  Greensboro; paternal grandparents, Lou and Cindy Modery of Gastonia, Paula Corgen of Ramseur; maternal grandparents, Tom and Lou Ann Lee of Sanford, Ray and Annette Binkley of Bear Creek; and great-grand-mother, Shirley Jones of Bennett.

Mr. Jerry Clyde Crabtree of Robbins, 67, passed away Wednesday, (12-03-2014).

Mr. William Donnell Siler, 63, of Siler City died Monday, (12-01-2014) at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.

Funeral services were held Sunday, (12-07-2014) at Unity Powerhouse Holiness Church in Staley, with Bishop William Goins officiating.

Mr. Siler was born January 23, 1951 to James and Callie Siler. A graduate ofJordan-MatthewsHigh School, he was a member ofUnityPowerhouseHolinessChurchwhere he served as Sunday School superintendant, was president of the Gospel Mass Choir, and was part of many other programs of the church.  He retired from Chatham Hospital due to his health. In addition to his parents, he was survived by a brother, Harry Siler and sister, Gloria Powell.

Surviving is his wife of 43 years, Wilma Cheek Siler; daughters, Tammy C. Walden, Teresa Siler, both of Siler City; four grandchildren; brother, Rev. Willie “Pete” Siler; sisters, Mrs. Patricia Austin, Loretta Williams of Siler City, and Mrs.Hazell Abbott of Upland, CA.

JAMES ELSIE CAMERON

James Elsie Cameron, 78, of Cameron, died Saturday, (12-06-2014), at First Health Moore Regional in Pinehurst.

The funeral was held Tuesday, (12-09-2014), at 3 p.m. at Pineywood Baptist Church with Rev. Paul McClure presiding.  Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Cameron was born in Moore County, February 8, 1936, to the late John and Annie Johnson Cameron.  In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by brothers, Ed, Odell, Tom, Earl and George Cameron.

HAZEL ALICE BEANE HAYES

Hazel Alice Beane Hayes, 89, of Siler City, passed away Monday, (12-08-2014) at Coventry House Assisted Living.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, (12-10-2014) at 2 p.m. at Loflin Funeral Home Chapel in Ramseur with Rev. Bobby V. Seagroves officiating. Burial followed in Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery.

Ms. Hayes was a native of Randolph County, daughter  of the late Carson L. and Annie Cox Beane, and  a graduate of Coleridge School. She attended business school, worked with Sears-Roebuck & Company, and later worked with the clerical department of the Internal Revenue Service and the Social Security Administration.  She was a founding member of Sharpe Road Baptist Church. Her husband, Edward Broughton Hayes, preceded her in death.

She is survived by sons Barry Hayes of SilerCity, Gareth Hayes of Durham; sister, Janette Beane Seagroves;  six grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Catherine Alston, 74, of Siler City passes away on Saturday, (12-06-2014) at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.

Surviving is a daughter, Caterina Alston and one sister, Hazel Headen.

 

WALTER EDWARD SHUE

    Walter Edward Shue, 88, was welcomed home into the arms of his savior, Jesus Christ, Wednesday, December 3, 2014.  His parents, Harvey Leslie Shue, Sr. and Lizzie Dale Smith Shue, who preceded him in death, passed away when he was a child and he spent his early childhood at the Junior Home Orphanage in Tiffin,Ohio.  When he grew older he lived with his brothers and sisters.  He served in the Merchant Marines and later moved to Sile City.  He retired as a letter carrier with the United States Postal Service in Siler City.

He is survived by his wife: Cristina (Cimino) Shue of Siler City; daughters, Brenda Brady and husband, Donnie of Jamestown, NC, Gloria A. Terry and husband, Joe of Asheboro; step-daughter, Monica Goodwin and husband, Douglas of Siler City, NC; seven grandchildren, Brian Brady, Carrie Thurman, Alyssa Gaetani, Brandon and Jackson Goodwin, Wendy Holland and Joey Terry; nine great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.  He is also survived by many nieces and nephews who called him “Uncle E”.

He was a faithful member of Rives Chapel Baptist Church which he loved and supported throughout his life.

He will be greatly missed by all who loved him.

GERRY ALAN PHILLIPS

Gerry Alan Phillips, 64,  of NC Hwy 42, Bear Creek died Friday, December 5, 2014 at First  Health Hospital, Pinehurst.

Gerry was born in Chatham County on August 21, 1950, the son of Wade Herman and Lois Smith Phillips.  Gerry was a member of Fall Creek Baptist Church where he had taught Sunday School,  was a former member of the choir and  will be remembered for his beautiful singing voice.  He was a 1968 graduate of Chatham Central High School and attended Elon College. He was employed by Ramtex for 37 years, was an avid hunter and fisherman and was known for his athletic abilities.  He attended Karate Class and was proud of being recognized as a 1st Dan Black Belt.  His greatest joys were times spent with his family, and he will be remembered as a loving, giving person.

Gerry was preceded in death by an infant son, Gregory Alan Phillips and a daughter, Crystal Lynne Phillips.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Sandy King Phillips; his parents, Herman and Lois Smith Phillips; sister, Cheryl Baldwin; a host of nieces and nephews and his best buddy, canine companion, Jack.

 VIRGINIA LAMBERT WOOD

Virginia  Lambert Wood was born on February 4, 1916 and died on December 5, 2014.  She was the wife of Harry DuPrey Wood, Jr, deceased.  Her children are Harry DuPrey Wood, III, Edwin Lambert Wood, deceased, and Sue Wood McLendon.  Her grandchildren are Edwin Lambert Wood, Jr, Harry DuPrey Wood, IV, Raymond Tyler Wood, Elizabeth Wood McLendon, Emily Lambert McLendon; and her great grandchildren are Jessica, Sammy, Lindsey, and Lilly.

Born on February 4, 1916 in Asheboro,NC to Wiley Fisher Lambert and Sue Brooks Lambert, Mrs. Wood graduated High School and then she graduated in 1936 from Meredith College in Raleigh,NC. She sat as a Member of the Board of Trustees in later years.  In 1940 she married the Reverend Harry DuPrey Wood Jr. Together they served, Angier Baptist Church and First Baptist Church in Eden,NC. While inEden, Mrs. Wood taught elementary school, served as president of WMU, Rockingham County as well as the executive board of WMU in RaleighNC.

In 1980, the Rev and Mrs. Wood moved toFrankfurt,Germanyfor almost ten years.   While he served as pastor of Bethel International Baptist Church, Mrs. Wood was elected president of the Women’s Missionary of Europe.

Virginia Wood lived in Chester for ten years. As a member of Chester Baptist Church, she played the piano for Sunday School and the bi-monthly Companion Dinners.  The Woman’s Club benefited from her musical talent as she was the pianist for the annual fashion show.  She was an avid bridge player and played at two times a week.

As a world traveler and an active lover of mankind, Virginia Lambert Wood served God enthusiastically, leaving her footprint of the love of Christ wherever she went.

The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, December 6, 2014 at the Chester Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home.  A funeral service was held at 3 p.m.  on Sunday, December 7, 2014 atChesterBaptist Church with Dr. Lloyd Braswell officiating.  Interment followed at Brush Creek Baptist Church Cemetery on Monday, December 8, 2014 at 2 p.m. where Virginia will be buried beside Rev. Harry D. Wood Jr., her husband.

   Mr. Herman Ray Phillips, 71, of Bennett,N.C. died Monday, December 8, 2014 at Hospice of Randolph County in Asheboro,N.C.

Herman (Ray) was born December 4, 1943, son of the late Randall Edison Phillips and Estie Ellen Maness.

Herman (Ray) worked for Lancer Corporation and Comfort Tech Inc. for 44 years serving as Vice President.

He was a Master wood craftsman and carpenter and spent many years restoring the family farmhouse. He collected old toys, loved to hunt, restore old tractors and was an avid, passionate golfer. Herman was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Cheryl Green.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Carol Lee Phillips of the home; one son, Ritchie Ray Phillips and one sister, Jenny Yow of Bennett,  two grandchildren,  Katie and Jacob Phillips, both of Bennett.

Esther Rich Brady, 81, of Bennett, died Monday, (11-24-2014) at her residence.

Wilbur Lee Baker, 75, of Sanford, died Sunday, (11-30-2014), at his home.

Mr. Baker was born May 20, 1939, in Harnett County, to the late Weaver Cleveland and Essie Ashworth Baker.  He was preceded in death by his brother James Calvin “JC” Baker and sisters, Clara Baker Betts, Callie Baker Cotten and Berlina Baker Seagroves.  He served in the US Army.  He was retired as a master carpenter in construction of residential homes. Mr. Baker was a member of Euphronia Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder.

    Janie Oakley Dowd, 82, of9515 NC Hwy 902, Siler City died Sunday, November 30, 2014 at her home.

Mrs. Dowd was born in Moore County on May 10, 1932, the daughter of James Carl and Bessie (Simpson) Oakley. Janie was retired from Kayser-Roth and a member of Meroney United Methodist Church and the Fellowship Sunday School Class. She enjoyed sewing, needle work and working in her garden. Mrs. Dowd was preceded in death by her parents, brother, J. C. Oakley and her husband, Bobby G. Dowd.

She is survived by two daughters, Lou Ann Dowd Moore and husband Charles, and Patty Dowd all of Bear Creek; grandchildren, Renee Moore-Bourbon of Hope Mills, Joshua Moore, Ethan Moore and Jonathan Hudson, all of Bear Creek; and great-grandson,  Kagan Walls-Moore

  Arthur Lee Davis Jr., 69, of Salisbury, passed away Saturday, November 22, 2014, at Carolinas Medical Center-NorthEast in Concord.

Arthur was born in Siler City on December 21, 1944, a son of the late Arthur Lee Davis Sr. and Edna Cheek Davis.

A 1963 graduate of Jordan-MatthewsHigh School, Arthur was in the banking business for 20 years and  was an owner-operator of a convenience store for 20 years.

A member of Harold B. Jarrett American Legion Post 342, he was an avid fisherman, loved being with his family and spending time with his best buddies, Scott Cornatzer and Fred Poplin.

Survivors include his wife, Cynthia F. Davis; daughter, Adrienne Davis Smith and husband Rod of Harrisburg; son, Mark Davis and wife Amy of Salisbury; grandchildren, Addison, Carson, Jake and Elly; brothers, Steve Davis and Jeff Davis; sisters, Linda Culberson, Sharon Strong, Shelia Cheek, Jean Maupin, Donna Davis and Debra Branson.

FRANCES PASCHAL BRACY

Frances Paschal Bracy, 96, of Siler City, and Sanford, died Sunday, November 30, 2014 at Parkview Rest and Retirement Center,Sanford.

Mrs. Bracy was born in Chatham County on August 27, 1918, daughter of Charlie and Flossie (Temple) Paschal.  She was raised in Bonlee, and moved to Richmond,Virginia to attend the Medical College of Virginia nursing program.  She was a Registered Nurse and worked many years in the Richmond area.  It was there she met and married, the love They retired to Lewisetta,Virginia and enjoyed owning and operating a Marina for several years.  Wilson Bracy died in 1991 and Frances moved back to Siler City  and reconnected with family and friends.  She started attending Siler City Presbyterian Church and enjoyed the fellowship of the people there.  Due to health issues,Frances first moved to the Bayberry Inn in Sanford, and then to Parkview Retirement Center.  She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Wilson Bracy; a sister, Gladys Kerrick; brothers, Wade Paschal and Robert Paschal.

She is survived by her niece, Linda Paschal Comer and husband Carroll Comer of Robbins; nephews, Phil Paschal and wife Marti of Matthews,  and John Paschal; special great-niece, Rebecca Drake and husband Robbie of Siler City and other great nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Thursday, December 4, 2014 from 1 to 2 p.m.  at Siler City Presbyterian Church.  The funeral will be Thursday, December 4, 2014 at 2 p.m. at Siler City Presbyterian Church,720 W. 3rd St.,Siler City,NCwith Rev.
